V-day approacheth

February 9th, 2009 at 04:38 am

Non-financial related, whiney, mopey post ahead. Feel free to skip if you wish.

For the first time in years, I've finally gotten used to most holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. What I mean is, they don't give me the blues anymore... well, no more than it would give anyone else in similar situations as mine the blues.

But there's still one holiday that bothers me, and chances are, it will continue to bother me. And that day is obviously Valentine's Day.

Yeah, it's a commercial holiday that's always hard to go out and get anything done yadda yadda. But it's still tough though. Living the single life doesn't bother me most of the time, but it is inevitable that this holiday would remind me that I am alone in this world....

On the bright side, it won't cost me anything? I don't know. I'll get over it. I don't really have a point with this entry either. Just kind of... I guess I've always blogged here when something is bothering me, so I suppose this is just habit.

Anyway, I don't mean to be a downer. I hope you guys have a Happy Valentine's Day!

I'm sorry Valentine's Day drags you down. Frown I've always seen it as an over commercialized holiday and don't care to celebrate it. Too many other days in the year that DO mean something to me! DH was leaving his volunteer job on Saturday and he said "see you next week!" The other guy mumbled something about V Day and having to get out of this one with his wife since he had already committed to the job. DH said "Oh, it's V Day? Good thing I have a wife who doesn't give a **** about it!" Well, that's just my take on things. Smile

You're not alone BA, we're here for you, even if *here* is far from your *there*! Hugs & Happy Valentine's Day to you. To me it's about love for all of creation - mankind, animalkind, the world at large and this beautiful planet we live on.

Can you invite a mix of other folks, who might be single or alone that day, over for a game night or something? BYOF (bring your own food), of course! You provide the place or the meet-up point, and the iced tea or beer????

Or maybe find a shelter to volunteer at that day? Something to get outside the 'romance' factor zone that seems overly sappy sometimes to me.

Ya, there are usually plenty of social functions that are available out there. I hear at the very least, bars tend to be a bit packed on days like this.

Too bad I'm not into bars, or even social functions like these. To me, it reminds me even more that not only am I feeling lonely, but I'm trying desperately hard to cover it up by trying to mingle with strangers or something.

I know, crazy perspective maybe, but that's how I feel about it. Still, I really do appreciate the sympathies, and yes, I too think it's an over-commercialized holiday. Still....

I understand where you're coming from. Even though it is an overly commercialized day, it is hard to get away from seeing the couples aspect so heavily promoted.

My church is even having a special "parents night out" for Valentine's. It's a great idea of course, but it also just kind of rubs it in.

Just one more week! You can make it. Avoid the stores, the tv commercials, ect.

Will you be my valentine, B.A.?? Hugs!!

I actually chuckled at that comment in real life. For you, Ima? Of course.

I always try to tell my kids that V day is for telling people you love, that you love them. All of the people you love, not just the ones you marry.

Because when I was a pre-teen, and teen I was always depressed over holidays...never managed to time the steady date thing and V-day until my husband.

So, don't go mulling over not having a life partner that is only one person in a vast network of folk you prolly love.

Instead if at all possible take your child out to dinner. (or better dinner in with his/her favorite move/book/game)

If you haven't got one of those, call your mom/dad/aunt/sister/gpa/whoever you love. And tell them so, because if you are at all a typical American, you prolly haven't said so in at least a year.

IMO skip the card, skip the candy, skip the overblown gestures, and try the simple phrase "I love you". If you must get fancy try I love X about you. (making X personalized of course)

You are NOT alone. Think about all the people you have in your life:
    - Your kids
    - Your parents
    - Your aunt who lets you live in her house
    - Your work colleagues
    - Your friends ... moochers tho they may be Smile
    - And that's just IRL. You have us too.

V-day depresses me and always have, I think because I just can't stand all that icky mushy junk. Obviously, even though I am married, I don't celebrate the "holiday" since I can't stand any association with it. But I have developed a taste for stalker horrors being watched on V-day, lol.

Yes, I agree. Valentine's Day isn't just for lovers but loved ones as well. I am very fortunate that I have wonderful parents, children, and even friends. I suppose I am also lucky that I will have the kids this weekend, so that will keep me occupied.

Caoineag: Stalker horror on V-day huh? Quite an interesting taste you've got there.

A decade ago my DH formed an "I hate Valentine's Day" club at his office in London. It was tremendously popular and they all went out to dinner on VD.

Buy the kids cupcakes and ponder the cash you've saved by avoiding this "holy day of obligation."

Oh my gosh, that's awesome! If there was one around here, I might actually join it!

Ah, but unfortunately, I don't hate Valentine's Day. In fact, I wish I could celebrate it... and that's why I feel blue about it.

Anyways, thanks everyone, as always, for the wonderful support and understanding.

I don't mind valentines day but i never really saw it as something to be celebrated like most other people did. every year i usually get DF a heart shaped chocolate. last year he bought home a rose for me and one for his sister (picked from my mums garden!). thats the extent of our valentines day festivities.

Over here on the single no BF side V-Day does seem to be designed to rub it in. I know how you feel BA and even though I have my son and will be working all day it can't go by fast enough for me.
