Biting my tongue

June 10th, 2009 at 12:27 am

Once in a long while, you run into someone who is an "internet troll". Someone who will post things that are inflammatory, whether they realize it or not. Trolls love provoking people. It's what they do. It's what helps them sleep at night, and it's what gives them that morning glow when they wake up.

Well, in the past few days, I just realized that I ran into one of the most infamous trolls in the internet world of investing. I'm not going to mention any names or relevant details because, to be honest, I don't want him to Google this stuff and find me here. Big Grin

Perhaps it sounds like a cop out, but seriously, this guy has been AROUND. Morningstar, Diehards, Motley Fools, you name it. Anywhere and everywhere, he'll pick fights about how his position is right and no one else is, and when he gets banned, he'll gripe about it on his website, about how everybody would rather enjoy their ignorant bliss rather than hear his prophetic truth.

So, what do you do when you are directly confronted and provoked by a world class celebrity internet troll?

After carefully considering the situation, I've decided that I'm going to literally bite my tongue and stick my head in the sand. Yep! I never thought there would ever an occasion where sticking your head in the sand is a good idea, but here it is!

So! Let's, uh, talk about something else, eh? Right, sooo, who here has Netflix? Because I'm beginning to think that maybe I should subscribe to it. In particular, does anyone use Netflix's Blu-ray? Do they cost the same as DVD rentals?

I never give the trolls what they want (attention). I wish everyone else would ignore them so they would go away! IT's really that simple...

I didn't know there was an infamous investing troll - hehe.

Netflix is great! No idea about the bluray though. I like being able to watch movies immediately through them too! I do enjoy the Netflix.

Netflix - they do charge more for bluray.

Blockbuster online - can't say enough good about them. They do not charge a premium for Blu Ray (currently). Of course we have some perks they have since phased out to new customers (free game rentals, etc.). We found them to be a little faster though (for our region anyway), and now we can pick up and return games in store, as a bonus.

P.S. Bluray charge is minimal so netflix may be better. If you watch a TON of movies (& games, like my spouse) Blockbuster wins.

lol. oh yes, trolls can be infuriating.
on the flipside, i used to live with a guy who would pick an argument about something, and argue it continuously, even if the argument he was picking he did not actually agree with his chosen side anyway - he was just arguing for the sake of it, and also because he 'believed that everyone should consider all sides to something'. it was something he got from going to university - but he didn't seem to get that people (other than his high and mighty self) DO consider the other side, they have weighed up the options, and are going for their side because of that. OH MY GOD. i actually lived with him and DF (he is a friend of DF's) for TWO YEARS.

whitestripe, did your ex find his calling as an attorney? lol

BA, you're right to ignore the troll. Don't feed him with your energy.

LOL! I'm enjoying your observation about this being one of the few instances that you do want to stick your head in the sand. . . I can't think of any others. . . well, maybe at some family gatherings it's a good idea too.

davera: he was an ex flatmate (not an ex-EX) and no, he didnt. he works in a stationery supply store (lets not go into WHY he spent 6 years at university on a graphic art degree to get a job in a stationery store...)

I am not a troll. You just took the wrong position on that trade.

HAHA, nice try merch! You're not making me fall for that even though my position wasn't wrong. It just wasn't quite right! Big Grin

I'm kidding, but I just want to be clear that this particular individual in question is NOT anyone here in SA.

While we're at it, I admit I have trolled in the past, especially when I was much younger, like way before SA's time. Looking back, I don't think I really meant to be like that, but I did anyways. I try my best not to be now. Yep, reformed troll here! Big Grin

Seriously though, this guy is really... special. MUST have the last word no matter what. MUST make it sound like I'm never wrong no matter what. MUST use 3 times as many words as necessary to make a point. MUST use the words "ludicrous" and "biggest mistake" in every response.

    A real piece of work.

I have to deal with a LIVE troll! But at work! Someone who is not happy and can't stand seeing others be happy and try to make them miserable or set them up for failure. Most people do not notice this right away because it is done manipulatively. I feel bad for the newbie’s here that fall for this.

Netflix - Loved their services. However do not have it at the moment. Canceled the service when we bought our new place and have too much to do. Never tried any other service so I would't know.

Better to bite your (own) tongue than someone elses!

Yep... cut off the supply of attention to the troll and you cut off their air supply...

also... don't let them see that they have "shook" your internal sense of self...that's they get off on...

Yep... not so much head in sand... as head in clouds... enjoying the view high about the scramblings of those little parasites....

I have put my Netflix account on hold for right now. I am grandfathered in to the 1 at a time 2x month plan for $5.40 - so if I completely canceled, then I'd lose it. (It *may* still be around, but I don't think it is.)

But ... if I wasn't in a super money cutting mode AND I thought I'd actually get two movies watched each month - then Netflix is definitely the way I'd go!

One of the sites I am on starts talking about jelly beans if the thread is started by trolls. All of us comment on favorite colors or how gross we think they are. After a few posts, it winds up a discussion on candy.

We use Netflix a lot. Just asked the hubster about the Blu-ray dvds from Netflix because he manages the account. He said it adds around $5.00 per month to your regular rate.
