Bucket list

May 25th, 2010 at 11:01 pm

A friend of mine just called me up with an odd question. He asked me if there is something I've always wanted to do but haven't been able to do so yet.

I told him I wanted to win a million dollars. He said, "Uh ok, now is there something else you wanted to do that's a lot more obtainable than that?" Big Grin

I chuckled and said, "Well, realistically, I wouldn't mind taking a vacation to this particular place. What about you?"

"I want to be able to retire comfortably some day." he says.

I said that I understood and agree with it, but then I asked, "So what brought this up? Want to tell me what this is about?"

"Nope!" he says.

Wow.

You have to understand, this is a guy who we've always been open to each other about everything, and the simple fact that he would not tell me what this is about really surprised me! I don't know what to make of this.

I will say that, in the end, we both want the same thing out of life. Come to think of it, I think we all basically want similar things out of life, eh? The only difference, really, is whether we have the resources to make it happen. Be it a vacation or a comfortable retirement, it all takes money....

But that's not saying anything new to you guys. What's got me really wondering is why this friend of mine is suddenly being so dodgy? Anybody have any ideas?

I actually got a little worried, until he said he wanted to retire comfortably. Maybe he was in a weird mood.

I'm still a little bit worried myself. I've known this guy for more than ten years now. It's not like him to be dodgy about anything. I guess I'll give him a little time and check in on him again.

I'd be concerned that he was facing his mortality or something (health?) because that's when you realize a bucket list is kind of pointless. It's kind of all about the wrong things, on many levels. (The typical bucket list, anyway).

BUT, since he mentioned retirement, seems he expects to be around a while? Big Grin I don't know - you got me...

Think he came into some money and is trying to figure out what to do with it?

I hope it means he came into some money - and he wants to share it with you.

Hehe be hilarious if he's got some kind of windfall, although I couldn't take any part of that. He's got kids to raise and a pretty sizable pile of debt. Wouldn't be right, especially since it's not an huge sum if he's asking for a realistic response from me.

Assuming it really is a windfall. I don't know, but hopefully, it's something nice like that and nothing bad.

Maybe he reach a scenario where he has to make some choices realizing now he can't have it all? Like college fund or something?
