I'm a filin' my return

February 7th, 2009 at 07:45 pm

Here we are, a perfectly beautiful Saturday day, and what am I doing? Filing my tax returns. Why oh why did I choose to do this right now?

Albeit, I'm doing it a bit "late", because I've always made it a point to try to get it done by the end of January.

Still, 2008 promised to be super easy-- and for the most part, it was-- so I thought I could just crank that out real fast, and go out and play.

But much to surprise and dismay, it also turns out that I owe $85 in taxes. I've never had a year where I owed money before. I guess it shouldn't bother me either, but for some reason, it does.

Is it because we had that stimulus check and that got taxed? Is this something I have to adjust my withholdings for, or is this just a fluke year? My withholding is already a 1.

Oh well, anyway, what's done is done, and I want to move on and enjoy the rest of the day.

I read somewhere that the IRS is reporting that 15% of returns have been filed with errors because they reported thier stim. check as taxable income when it is not. It might help to try and google it.

Hmm, that's a good point, although I used TurboTax online. It did ask how much stimulus I received, but I'm not sure if that made any difference on my taxes being reported?

The tax programs are only asking if you received the stimulus, so they can get it to you if you are eligible. It should not affect your return. Apparently, you made more money this year! And...didn't have the government holding your money interest free.

Oh you don't suppose it's overtime is it? I did make a bit of overtime in 2008.

I wouldn't worry about a little underpay like that although I know it wasn't the stimulus and I doubt it was overtime. Didn't you have some capital gains this year? or did your losses offset those? It could have been interest income too on that big fat EF Smile

In my opinion having to pay a little bit is a sign you are doing it right.

I suspect it's either overtime, or yes, interest from two banks that I've had an account with last year. Ya, I agree this isn't a bad thing. Anyway, thanks.

I just finished my tax information on Saturday and got it mailed out on Monday to our accountant. I think that early February is Ok to do your return. At least you can adjust for what you owe. Why can't you wait to mail it? It's not due until April.

Because I don't like loose ends hanging over my head, especially with something I think is important like this.

The quicker I get it done, the quicker I can fuggeitbutit!
