My dirty frugal secret

March 21st, 2009 at 02:12 am

So, here I am contemplating what I want to do for the rest of the night, and at nearly 10pm EST, I'm thinking about just going straight to bed. But if I wanted to get out and do something real quick, well, I can do that too.

Now, here's the really funny part: As I am looking over my budget... yes, Friday night, single, can do whatever the heck I want, and what am I doing? Looking over my budget for the umpteenth time today. Nope, still hasn't changed from a few hours ago! Big Grin

But see, that's what occurred to me. Maybe the real secret to my frugality-- the real, dirty secret-- isn't so much that I am just motivated towards frugality, but....

I may have also forgotten how to spend money?

Does that sound crazy? Am I thinking too hard? Do you guys know what I mean by this?

Don't get me wrong. I think I can window shop as well as anyone. I can even "force" myself to buy something if it comes down to that.

But let's be honest with myself here. Ultimately, I didn't really get up and buy or do anything, did I? No. Instead, I'm sitting here trying to psychoanalyze why I am sitting here, looking over my budget.

So, I wonder. Have I really forgotten how to... *gulp* spend money? Have I, in some ways, also forgotten how to live a little and perhaps enjoy life? I don't know, what do you think?

Anyways, I'm going to think about it some more... as I head to bed while looking over my budget. Big Grin

Well, if you have to have amnesia, that sounds like a good one to have....Don't worry, your secret is safe here...sleep tight!

Maybe you are just acting the way most of us should. We should be looking to see what we need and finding there isn't much out there that fits the category.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I can buy that $2 coffee, and usually I don't, but when I do I think I shouldn't. And now with the bringing in of lunch, that coffee is often the only frivolous spending I'll do that week. And its "only" $2.

I just don't enjoy spending money on something I don't need. I do enjoy watching my interest add up!

Oh I bet you could remember if you had to, but you have found that in general a night out isn't as good as a night in. Oh the flashy lights and all seem fun, but they are rather tiring.

Hehe, ok. I guess maybe I'm just thinking too hard to on this one.

when the lightbulb comes on to which you are drawn, and it will unexpectedly, you will have nary a second thought about spending money.

maybe it will be in the form of a volunteership, and grow into a hobby (something like my art association relationship over the past 2 years) or maybe it will manifest itself from seeing a cooking show.

do you get what I mean? Follow your bliss when you find it (robert bly) and keep picking up the pennies on the ground!

(your comment on my 'new' penny post is my fav)

I don't think you've forgotten how to spend money. I seem to remember a few nice suits you bought just awhile ago. Maybe you've forgotten how to waste money, such as going out when you don't really want to, buying things you don't really need...etc.

My economics teacher always talks about how people will buy when the satisfaction they receive from a purchase exceeds the price they have to pay for it. Maybe us more frugal type realize that the satisfaction we receive from frivolous purchases isn't as much as we want it to be.

... and I do think you are over analysing it ...
