Getting nervous about taxes

March 29th, 2010 at 01:13 pm

Anybody still haven't gotten their tax returns yet? I haven't. I typically do 1040s with standard deductions. My financial situation is just that simple most of the time.... But this year, I decided to itemize my deductions, and as a result, I've had to mail in some paperwork to prove my deductions.

Or least that's what Turbotax said, and so, I followed their instructions to mail in my federal filings.

I've also tried to check on the update status on the IRS website, but that doesn't appear to work for me. I don't know if it's because I went through Turbotax or what, but does anyone know what may be going on? Any other way to tell if the IRS even received my packet? Since this is my first year that I mailed in my itemized deductions, how do I know if it's approved or not? Anything else I should know or do differently next time?

we have to pay this year. But the standard time in the Virgin Islands is 8 months to get refunds. Which is better than 10 years ago when the wait time was 3 years.

I won't pretend to be an expert, but that's kind of weird in my experience. You have to keep proof of your itemized deductions, but you don't typically have to mail in proof. I've itemized for about 6 years. This year I efiled and wasn't asked to mail anything in. Does TurboTax have a customer service number you can call?

I e-filed mine over a month ago and still haven't gotten my refund.

Yes, the itemizing thing sounds weird.

You can see here, if your refund is being processed:

MM, that's the IRS page where I checked my status but got nothing.

But just to be sure, I did it again just now, and this time, it's saying that they've received it. Whew!

I filed it back in January, so I'm also a little surprised that it took this long... or maybe I shouldn't be? Well, they got it now, so at least I'm not worried about it getting lost in the mail somehow.

Anyways, now I only have to worry about it being filed right. Big Grin

I wonder if it got lost. A January file would be a refund in a few days, generally. You beat the crowd, and usually refunds are pretty fast, within 2 weeks.

    Lucky you! Wink

I e-filed late January. Received the refund in about 8 days, since I was just under the cutoff. I'm glad you confirmed they received it. Did it say when it was received? It seems you should have a refund within a couple weeks from that date.

Anyone else: if you efiled, make sure you get the confirmation email that your return was accepted. If it was not, it means you have something to fix before you can resubmit it for filing.

DH works the Customer Service phones for the IRS. One of the questions that he is trained to answer is:

    Where's my refund/Where's my return?

He's been getting a lot of calls from paper filers asking that question.

Yeah? Does have any particular advice about that, or is he tired of people like me? Big Grin

I itemize and I also work for an accounting firm. I have NEVER had to send anything in to prove my deductions. Nor have any of our clients. I filed in mid-February and had my refund(s) within 10 days.

Well, that's strange then. But that's what Turbotax told me to do, so I did. Hopefully, the fact that I provided paperwork only makes it more likely that I won't have any problems with my filings. Just so long as it works, I don't really care what they do or do not want from me.

I also am waiting worriedly for a refund that should have been here by now. I paper filed in early February! I wonder if there is some kind of unusual logjam this year? I guess I'll check the status and see what's up. I got my web-filed state refund VERY quickly, which was nice.
